The Lakes and Summer Recreation
Lake James, the larger of the park’s two lakes, provides the setting for most of the summer water recreation. The swimming beach on Lake James is excellent, with a gradual sandy bottom, clear water, and a well-maintained beach area with changing facilities and a concession stand. The beach can get crowded on summer weekends, but the lake is large enough that paddlers and swimmers have plenty of room. Canoe, kayak, paddle boat, and rowboat rentals are available at the boathouse, and spending a calm morning paddling the edges of Lake James through the patches of emergent vegetation where herons fish is one of those quietly perfect experiences that defines the best of Midwest state park life.
Fishing on both Lake James and Snow Lake is excellent, with largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike all present. The park is stocked annually to maintain good fish populations, and fishing from the shore or from a rental boat is a popular activity throughout the warm months. A valid Indiana fishing license is required.
The Toboggan Run
Pokagon’s most distinctive attraction is its famous toboggan run, which operates during winter when snow and ice conditions allow. The run is a refrigerated toboggan track that drops about 90 feet in elevation over a quarter-mile course, reaching speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. The refrigeration system keeps the ice surface in good condition regardless of air temperature, allowing the toboggan run to operate reliably throughout the winter season. Four-person toboggan sleds are provided, and the rides are exhilarating for older children, teenagers, and adults. This is one of the premier winter recreational attractions in Indiana and draws visitors from across the northern part of the state throughout the season.
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the park’s trails make the rest of the park accessible in winter, and the forest is particularly beautiful when snow covers the ground and ice fringes the lakeshore. The Potawatomi Inn, the park’s lodge, stays open year-round and provides a warm base for winter adventures.
The Potawatomi Inn
The Potawatomi Inn is Pokagon State Park’s centerpiece and one of the finest state park lodges in Indiana. Built in 1927 on a point of land between Lake James and Snow Lake, the inn has been expanded and updated over the decades while retaining its rustic, welcoming character. The dining room serves good, hearty food in a setting with excellent lake views, and the inn’s fireplace lobby is one of those warm, comfortable spaces that feels exactly right after a day of hiking or skiing. Cabins and cottages are available for groups and families who want more privacy, and the park’s campground provides additional options for visitors who prefer camping.
Hiking Trails and Wildlife
Pokagon has more than 20 miles of trails ranging from easy lakeshore walks to moderately hilly routes through the hardwood forest. The nature preserve areas within the park protect high-quality examples of the upland forest and wetland habitats native to the lake country of northeastern Indiana. Wildlife viewing is excellent: white-tailed deer are abundant and frequently seen, great blue herons fish the shallows of both lakes, and the diverse forest-wetland edge habitat supports a wide variety of songbirds. Pokagon is a popular spring birding destination, with the forest and lakeshore habitats attracting a good variety of migratory warblers and waterbirds during the May migration peak.
Getting There
Pokagon State Park is located in Steuben County, Indiana, near the town of Angola, just off Interstate 69 at exit 154. It’s about 45 miles north of Fort Wayne and about 60 miles southeast of South Bend. The interstate access makes it one of the more convenient state parks to reach in Indiana, and it draws visitors from both Indiana and the neighboring states of Ohio and Michigan. The park charges a vehicle entry fee. Inn and cabin reservations for summer weekends and the winter toboggan season fill up months in advance and should be made early.
