Lennie’s originally opened its doors back in 1989. Founders Jeff Mease and Helen “Lennie” Busch initially launched it as a cozy spot that introduced gourmet pizza to the Bloomington community. They quickly developed a massive passion for craft beer, but ran into a major roadblock because old state laws actually made it illegal for a restaurant to brew and sell beer on its own premises. Instead of giving up, Jeff worked closely with Indiana state legislators to change the law.
Because of those efforts, they successfully opened the Bloomington Brewing Company right next to the restaurant in 1994, making Lennie’s the very first commercial brewpub in southern Indiana.
While the restaurant moved from its original 10th Street location to Kirkwood Avenue a few years ago, it kept every bit of its unforgettable, cozy charm. The interior strikes a perfect balance between a lively neighborhood tavern and a relaxed campus hangout.
